Skiing and snow tubing at Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley North Carolina begins early - sometimes the weekend before Thanksgiving as soon as the nights are cold enough to make snow. Cataloochee Ski Area is generally the earliest to open andthe latest to close. Cataloochee Ski Area, North Carolina's very first ski area which opened in 1962 is well known for its Great Skiing in the Great Smokies. One-mile high with a 740-foot vertical drop, Cataloochee Ski Area features 14 slopes and trails for the skiing skills of all skiers from novices to expert levels. Cataloochee Ski Area has rental shop and a ski school for skiing instruction for all ages and levels of skiing expertise. Night skiing and snowboarding are also featured on the slopes.
